Advanced Clinical Massage

Advanced Clinical Massage

If you have been living with pain that won't shift, tension that keeps coming back, or you have tried physio, sports massage or chiropractic treatment without lasting results, advanced clinical massage is worth understanding. For many clients it is the treatment that finally works.

Rather than applying general techniques across the whole body, Ema carries out a thorough assessment first, identifying exactly where your pain is coming from, what structures are involved, and what your body needs to start recovering. Every session is completely individual. Ema draws on a wide toolkit of specialist techniques, selecting and combining the ones most suited to your specific condition.

The goal is not temporary relief. It is finding the root cause of your pain and working toward lasting change. Every session ends with tailored advice, stretches and guidance to help you maintain progress between appointments.

We can help with:

🔬 Myofascial Release

Releases deep layers of connective tissue that restrict movement and cause chronic pain. Particularly effective for long-term conditions where other treatments have not worked.

🎯 Neuromuscular Therapy

Identifies and treats trigger points — tight knots within muscle tissue that refer pain to other areas of the body. Often the reason pain appears somewhere different to where the problem actually is.

🤲 Positional Release

Gently releases muscle spasm without force or discomfort. Particularly useful for acute pain, post-surgical recovery and sensitive areas where deep pressure is not appropriate.

💪 Advanced Sports Massage

Addresses injury, muscle imbalance and recovery. Effective for both sports injuries and the physical demands of everyday work and life.

🦷 TMJ and Facial Work

Specialist treatment for jaw pain, headaches, facial tension and temporomandibular joint dysfunction. A rare specialism that many clients travel specifically to access.

📋 Orthopaedic Assessment

Movement and postural testing to identify the true source of pain rather than just treating where it hurts. This is what makes every treatment assessment-led, not symptom-led.

Benefits of Advanced Clinical Massage

🎯 Targets the root cause

Unlike general massage, clinical massage is assessment-led. Ema identifies the specific structures causing your pain and works precisely on those areas. Clients regularly say she found and resolved problems in one session that other therapists had missed entirely.

🙌 Lasting back and neck pain relief

A randomised controlled trial of 401 patients found massage significantly reduced chronic back pain with benefits lasting up to 12 months. A systematic review of 15 trials found massage produced significantly better pain relief for neck pain compared to inactive therapies.

🧠 Reduces stress and anxiety

A review in the International Journal of Neuroscience found massage reduced cortisol levels by an average of 31% and increased serotonin and dopamine by 28% and 31% respectively. For clients with chronic pain, the psychological relief is often as significant as the physical results.

🔄 Restores movement and flexibility

Myofascial release and neuromuscular techniques release deep tissue restrictions that limit your range of movement. Many clients notice they are moving more freely within days of treatment, particularly those restricted by long-term tension or injury.

😴 Improves sleep

Pain and muscle tension are among the most common causes of disrupted sleep. As both reduce following treatment, clients consistently report sleeping significantly better after sessions with Ema. Reduced cortisol and increased serotonin from massage both contribute to more restful sleep.

📋 Tools to self-manage

Every session ends with personalised advice — stretches, posture corrections, movement tips and lifestyle guidance specific to your condition. Clients say they learn more about their body from one session with Ema than from years of other treatment.

What Happens at Your Appointment

Every appointment at Warrington Pain Clinic follows the same careful process. Nothing is rushed, nothing is guesswork. Here is what to expect from your first visit.

📋 Consultation and assessment
Your first session begins with a detailed consultation. Ema will ask about your pain history, lifestyle, previous treatments and what you are hoping to achieve. She uses orthopaedic and movement assessments to pinpoint what is causing your problem before any treatment begins.

📝 Your individual treatment plan
Based on the assessment, Ema designs a treatment specifically for you. She chooses the right combination of techniques for your condition, not a generic routine. She explains what she has found and what she plans to do before she starts, so you always know what is happening and why.

🙌 Hands-on treatment
Ema works precisely on the structures that need attention, using advanced techniques including myofascial release, neuromuscular therapy, positional release and more. You are in control throughout. Communication is key and Ema will check in with you regularly.

🏠 Aftercare advice
Every session ends with tailored advice specific to your condition. Stretches, movement tips, posture guidance and lifestyle changes to help you maintain progress between appointments. You leave with a clear plan, not just a treatment.

⏱ Durations
60 or 90 minutes. First appointments include a full consultation so please allow an extra 15 minutes.

🌿 The environment
Our clinic sits on the edge of a woodland park with natural birdsong. A calm, private setting with warm, relaxing surroundings. Music can be played during your session if you prefer.

🚗 Parking and facilities
Free parking is available directly outside. We advise avoiding a heavy meal before your appointment. Toilet facilities are available on site. If you have any special requirements please get in touch and we will accommodate you.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is advanced clinical massage painful?

Some techniques involve firm pressure on tight or tender tissue which can feel intense, but Ema works within your comfort level at all times and will check in throughout. Ema always calms the nervous system first, ensuring you are relaxed before working into any painful areas. Most clients describe it as a good pain that brings real relief. You may feel some soreness the day after, similar to post-exercise muscle fatigue, which usually passes within 24 to 48 hours.

How many sessions will I need?

This varies depending on your condition, how long you have had it, and how your body responds. Many clients feel significant improvement after just one or two sessions. For chronic or long standing conditions a course of treatments is usually recommended. Ema will give you an honest assessment after your first appointment and will never recommend more sessions than she believes are necessary.

How is this different from a sports massage?

Sports massage applies general techniques to loosen and prepare muscle tissue. Advanced clinical massage is assessment-led. Ema identifies the specific structures causing your pain and uses targeted techniques to address them. It is more precise, more individual, and focused on getting to the root cause rather than providing temporary relief.

What should I wear and what do I need to bring?

For clinical massage it depends on the area being treated. Ema only needs access to the specific area she is working on, so you do not need to undress fully. Many clients keep their clothing on and simply adjust it as needed. Whatever you decide, you will always be properly covered to ensure your privacy and comfort. Ema can also work over clothing if you prefer. Loose, comfortable clothing is ideal. You do not need to bring anything else as Ema provides everything needed.

Do I need a referral from my doctor?

No referral is needed. You can book directly online. Ema will carry out her own assessment at your first appointment. If she identifies anything that requires medical attention she will advise you accordingly and refer you to the right person if needed.

Can clinical massage help with long-term or chronic pain?

Yes. Chronic pain is one of Ema's specialisms. Many of her clients have been in pain for months or years and have tried other treatments without lasting results. Clinical massage, particularly myofascial release, can be highly effective for chronic pain because it addresses the underlying tissue restrictions and movement patterns that keep pain persistent.

Is there a consultation form I need to complete?

Yes. All new clients are asked to complete a consultation form before their first appointment. This helps Ema prepare for your session and ensures your treatment is safe and appropriate. Complete the consultation form here.

Do you offer gift vouchers for clinical massage?

Yes. Gift vouchers are available for all treatments and are valid for 12 months. They make a thoughtful gift for anyone dealing with pain or stress. View gift vouchers.

"After having chiropractic adjustments a few years ago and more recently physio elsewhere I was desperate for my lower back pain to lessen after 10 months of constant pain. I can honestly say after my first treatment with Ema I had the most relief from that pain and after each treatment I leave her feeling stronger and always have the best night's sleep."

Jane Roberts Advanced Clinical Massage
★★★★★

"I have been struggling with back and neck pain for a really long time. Nothing seemed to help — physio, exercises, etc. After just 3 treatments with Ema I started to have hope I may be pain free. If you struggle with chronic pain for a really long time, having somebody you can trust and who understands can have a great impact on your recovery."

Anna Ciziel Advanced Clinical Massage
★★★★★

"She is super knowledgeable and gave me loads of advice about my posture and water intake to complement the massage. Her technique is lovely and my long term niggly neck and lower back issues felt much looser when she had finished. Would highly recommend and will definitely be back."
