Pelvic Girdle Pain

Pelvic Girdle Pain Treatment in Warrington

Pelvic girdle pain affects the joints and ligaments of the pelvis, causing pain in the hips, groin, inner thighs, lower back and buttocks. It is most common during pregnancy, starting around 20 to 30 weeks in most cases, but it can persist for months or even years after birth. Many women are told it will resolve on its own after delivery. For some it does. For others it becomes a long-term condition that significantly affects daily life.

Pelvic girdle pain is not just a pregnancy problem. Ema has treated women with PGP years after birth who had been through physio and other appointments without lasting improvement. The pelvis is a complex structure and effective treatment requires understanding how it works, what is driving the dysfunction, and how the surrounding structures including the jaw, the hips and the lumbar spine all contribute to pelvic stability.

Every session begins with an introduction to the dynamics of the pelvis using a model, a thorough assessment, and a treatment tailored precisely to where you are. After your first session you will receive a personalised self treatment guide as a PDF to use at home between appointments.

Pelvic Girdle Pain — In Ema's Words

Pelvic girdle pain is everything on the outside of the pelvis. The joints, the ligaments, the surrounding muscles. It most commonly starts around the 20 to 30 week mark in pregnancy, though I have seen it start earlier. The hormone relaxin loosens the ligaments in preparation for birth, which is necessary, but it can lead to instability and pain in the hips, groin, pubic bone and lower back that can be debilitating.

I came to specialise in this condition partly through my own experience. I developed pelvic girdle pain myself and had to work out what actually helped. That led me to research it formally and ultimately to base my Level 6 dissertation on PGP. Through that research I developed a self treatment guide that I now give to every client after their first session as a PDF. It covers practical tools they can use at home between appointments. I have given this guide to midwives and they have found it helps with their own chronic conditions too.

One of the things that makes my approach different is the pelvis model I use at the start of every appointment. I show you the bones, explain how the joints move and where the pain is coming from. Most clients have never had anyone explain their pelvis to them before. Understanding what is happening in your body is part of the treatment.

Something I also work with is the relationship between the jaw and the pelvis. There is a symbiotic connection between the two. In some cases treating the TMJ produces significant improvement in pelvic girdle pain. I have had clients who have gone and told their friends and family about this because the results were so unexpected. It does not apply to everyone but it is always worth exploring.

Pelvic girdle pain is not something people talk about openly. Unlike pregnancy massage, women are not always willing to put a review online mentioning pelvic floor issues. I understand that completely. But I have worked with many women in this situation and I will always treat you with complete discretion. If you have been struggling with this and have not found lasting help elsewhere, please get in touch. I genuinely believe I can help.

Why Clinical Massage Works for Pelvic Girdle Pain

🎯 Assessment-led treatment

Ema begins every session with an introduction to the pelvis using a model, so you understand exactly what is happening in your body. Treatment is then targeted at the specific structures driving your pain, not applied generally across the area.

🔬 Research-backed results

Research specifically on pelvic girdle pain confirms massage produces significant pain relief for lumbar, sciatica and pelvic girdle pain in pregnancy. Ema’s Level 6 dissertation was focused on pelvic girdle pain, making her one of the most specialist practitioners in the UK for this condition.

🦷 The jaw and pelvis connection

There is a well established relationship between the jaw and the pelvis. In some cases treating the TMJ produces significant improvement in pelvic girdle pain. Ema is one of very few therapists in the region who understands and works with this connection.

📄 Self treatment guide

After your first session Ema sends you a personalised PDF self treatment guide so you can continue to manage your pain at home between appointments. This guide is based on Ema’s own research and has helped many women who had not found lasting relief from other treatments.

😴 Better sleep and mobility

Pelvic girdle pain disrupts sleep, makes walking difficult and affects everything from turning over in bed to getting in and out of the car. As pain reduces and the pelvis stabilises, clients consistently report significant improvements in all of these areas.

🤰 Specialist pregnancy and postnatal care

Ema is trained and insured to treat PGP throughout pregnancy and after birth. She has worked with clients experiencing PGP years after delivery who had been through multiple other treatments without lasting results. It is never too late to seek help.

What to Expect at Your Appointment

Every pelvic girdle pain appointment begins with an introduction to the pelvis using a model, so you can see exactly what is happening in your body. Ema will then carry out a thorough assessment before any hands-on treatment begins. No two treatments are the same.

⏱ Durations

60 or 90 minutes, from £50 and £70. For new clients with complex or long-term PGP, 90 minutes is often recommended for the first session.

🛏 Position and comfort

You will be comfortably supported on your side with soft V-shaped pregnancy pillows if pregnant. Ema adapts your position throughout to access the areas that need treatment. You are always well covered and your modesty maintained.

👗 What to wear

Loose, comfortable clothing works best. You may be asked to undress to your underwear so the pelvis and surrounding area can be assessed and treated properly.

🌿 The environment

Our clinic sits on the edge of a woodland park, with natural bird song. A calm, unhurried setting where you can focus entirely on your recovery.

📄 After your treatment

After your first session Ema will send you a personalised self treatment guide as a PDF. This is based on her own research and gives you practical tools to manage your pelvic girdle pain at home between appointments.

🚗 Parking and facilities

We advise you to avoid a heavy meal and use the toilet before you arrive. Toilet facilities are available on site. If you have any special requirements please get in touch.

📌 New clients: No need to arrive early. The consultation, pelvis model introduction and assessment are all built into your appointment time. All new clients are asked to complete a consultation form before their first session, which you can do online in advance.

Pelvic Girdle Pain — When It Starts and Who It Affects

Pelvic girdle pain can affect women at any stage of pregnancy and after birth. It is not something you just have to put up with. Ema is one of the most specialist practitioners in the UK for this condition, with her Level 6 dissertation focused specifically on PGP research.

During pregnancy

PGP most commonly starts around the 20 to 30 week mark, though it can begin earlier. The hormone relaxin loosens the pelvic ligaments in preparation for birth, which can lead to instability and pain. Ema is trained and insured to treat throughout pregnancy and will always assess you individually before treatment begins.

After birth

For many women PGP does not resolve after delivery. The body can take up to 5 years to fully recover hormonally and mechanically. Postnatal PGP is one of Ema’s core specialisms. She has treated women years after birth who had been through physio and other appointments without lasting results.

The jaw connection

Ema has a particular interest in how the jaw and pelvis relate to each other, a connection she finds genuinely fascinating and is still exploring, even though it is not yet fully understood within the profession. Some clients have noticed a difference in pelvic girdle pain after jaw focused treatment, and Ema continues to investigate this relationship with curiosity rather than claiming it as a guaranteed fix.

Ema’s own experience

Ema developed pelvic girdle pain herself and worked through it by understanding the pelvis and discovering what actually helped. That personal experience is what drove her to research PGP formally and develop the self treatment approach she now gives to every client.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can massage help with pelvic girdle pain?

Yes. Ema has been treating pelvic girdle pain for many years and her Level 6 dissertation was focused specifically on PGP research. She uses a combination of soft tissue treatment, the pelvis model demonstration, and a personalised self treatment guide that she sends after your first session. Many clients who had not found lasting relief from other treatments have seen significant improvement.

When does pelvic girdle pain usually start in pregnancy?

In most cases PGP begins around the 20 to 30 week mark, though it can start earlier. The hormone relaxin loosens the pelvic ligaments in preparation for birth, which can lead to instability and pain in the hips, groin, pubic bone and lower back. The sooner you seek treatment the easier it is to manage.

I still have pelvic pain years after birth. Can you help?

Yes. Postnatal pelvic girdle pain is one of Ema’s core specialisms. The body can take up to 5 years to fully recover from birth hormonally and mechanically. Ema has treated women years after delivery who had been through physio and other appointments without lasting results. It is never too late to seek help.

What is the self treatment guide?

After your first session Ema will send you a personalised PDF guide with practical tools to manage your pelvic girdle pain at home between appointments. This guide is based on Ema’s own research and clinical experience. It covers self treatment techniques, postural adjustments and movement guidance specific to your situation.

What is the jaw and pelvis connection?

There is a well established symbiotic relationship between the jaw and the pelvis. In some cases treating the TMJ produces significant improvement in pelvic girdle pain. This is a rare but powerful finding that Ema has experienced with a number of clients. If you have jaw tension alongside your PGP it is always worth mentioning at your appointment.

How many sessions will I need?

This varies depending on how long you have had PGP and how your body responds. Many clients see significant improvement within 3 to 5 sessions. Ema will give you an honest assessment after your first appointment and will not recommend more sessions than she believes are necessary.

Do I need a GP referral?

No referral is needed. You can book directly online. Ema will carry out her own assessment at your first appointment. If she identifies anything that requires medical attention, she will advise you accordingly.

What if I need to cancel or reschedule?

No problem at all. If you need to cancel or reschedule, just get in touch and we will always do our best to rearrange your appointment or provide a refund. Full details are in our terms and conditions.

"I have been struggling with back and neck pain for a really long time - nothing seem to help - physio, exercises, etc. After just 3 treatments with Ema I started to have hope I may be pain free! Ema is a great therapist with a holistic approach to your problem. But what I really like about her is a kind and empathic approach - if you struggle with chronic pain for a really long time having somebody you can trust and who understands can have a great impact on your recovery."
