Orthopaedic Assessment in Warrington
All clinical and pain-focused treatments at Warrington Pain Clinic begin with a thorough orthopaedic assessment, included free of charge. Before any hands-on work begins, Ema takes the time to understand exactly what is happening in your body and why.
Where you feel pain is not always where the problem originates. The muscles of the body are connected like a web, pulling and pushing on each other in different directions. Pins and needles in the arm, for instance, can stem from a problem in the neck or back rather than the arm itself. Without a proper assessment, treatment risks addressing the symptom rather than the cause.
If you are booking a relaxation treatment such as a relaxation massage, reflexology, waxing or therapeutic pedicure without a specific pain concern, a brief consultation replaces the full assessment, to ensure the treatment is safe and tailored to you.
The assessment usually takes around 20 minutes and forms the foundation of your entire treatment plan.
What Happens During Your Assessment
The assessment is straightforward and non-invasive. You do not need to prepare anything in advance. Here is what to expect.
💬 Initial consultation
Ema begins by asking about your symptoms, how long you have had them, what makes them better or worse, and any relevant history. This is built into your appointment time at no extra charge.
🔄 Range of movement testing
Ema uses a series of simple range of movement tests to help identify where the real source of the problem lies. These are gentle, guided movements that help pinpoint which structures are involved.
🔍 Finding the real source
Because the muscles in the body are all connected, pain in one area is often driven by restriction or tension somewhere else entirely. The assessment helps identify the true origin rather than just treating where it hurts.
📋 Your treatment plan
Based on the assessment findings, Ema explains what she has found and designs a treatment specifically for your presentation. You will always know what she is doing and why before she starts.
🏠 Advice and rehabilitation
Every session ends with tailored advice on posture, movement and exercises. Starting with releasing tense muscles and building progressively toward strength-based work to help prevent further injury.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the orthopaedic assessment included in my appointment?
For all clinical and pain-focused treatments, yes, the orthopaedic assessment is included free of charge with no need to book it separately. For relaxation treatments such as relaxation massage, reflexology, waxing or therapeutic pedicure where there is no specific pain concern, a brief consultation takes its place to ensure your treatment is safe and appropriate.
How long does the assessment take?
The assessment usually takes around 20 minutes and is built into your overall appointment time. No need to arrive early.
Do I need a GP referral for an orthopaedic assessment?
No referral is needed. You can book directly online. The assessment is part of every first clinical appointment at Warrington Pain Clinic.
What is the difference between this and an NHS orthopaedic assessment?
Ema's assessment is a soft tissue and movement-based assessment focused on identifying the muscular and fascial causes of your pain. It is not a medical diagnosis. If Ema identifies anything that requires medical attention, she will always refer you to the appropriate professional.
Will I still get a full treatment in my appointment?
Yes. The assessment informs the treatment, it does not replace it. Ema moves straight into hands-on treatment once she has identified the best approach for your presentation. For new clients with complex or long-term conditions, a 90 minute appointment is often recommended to allow sufficient time for both.
Does the assessment happen at every appointment?
A full assessment takes place at your first appointment. At follow-up appointments Ema will check in on your progress and adjust the treatment plan accordingly, which typically takes less time than the initial assessment.
What if I book a relaxation treatment but mention I also have pain?
If you mention a pain concern at your consultation, Ema will always factor this into your treatment. For clients who want a more thorough assessment and targeted treatment for pain, booking an advanced clinical massage appointment is likely to be a better fit.
