Foot and Ankle Pain

Foot and Ankle Massage in Warrington

We depend on our feet enormously. Each foot has around 7,000 nerve endings and a complex structure of bones, muscles and ligaments that absorbs huge amounts of force every day, whether you're walking, standing, or on your feet for work. When something in that structure becomes overloaded, tight, or injured, even a small issue can become genuinely unbearable.

Simple wear and tear from running, jumping, or standing on hard surfaces can take its toll over time. Unsupportive footwear, flat shoes, worn out trainers, or shoes with little structure, can lead to weakness in the muscles and ligaments that support the foot and ankle. This often results in tightening of the fascia and surrounding connective tissue, contributing to conditions such as ankle sprains, tendonitis, and metatarsalgia.

Every treatment begins with a brief orthopaedic assessment so nothing is guesswork. Ema identifies exactly which structures in the foot and ankle are contributing to your pain before any hands-on work begins.

We can help with:

Plantar fasciitis and heel pain Ankle sprains Ankle instability Tendonitis Metatarsalgia (pain on top of the foot) General foot stiffness Standing job related foot pain

If heel pain on the sole of your foot, especially first thing in the morning, is your main issue, visit our dedicated plantar fasciitis page for more specific information.

Why Clinical Massage Works for Foot and Ankle Pain

⚖️ Improves balance and stability

Research into chronic ankle instability has found that manual therapy and plantar massage can improve postural control, helping the ankle feel more stable after a sprain or repeated instability.

🎯 Assessment led treatment

Ema’s orthopaedic assessment identifies exactly which structures, ligaments, tendons, or surrounding muscles, are contributing to your foot or ankle pain, so treatment is targeted rather than generalised.

🔄 Supports recovery after a sprain

A review of ankle sprain rehabilitation research found massage produced a meaningful improvement compared to a control group, supporting its use alongside other rehab approaches.

🦶 Addresses tendonitis and overuse

Tendonitis and metatarsalgia often build up gradually from repetitive load. Releasing tight, overworked tissue can relieve pressure on the structures that are becoming irritated.

💪 Restores movement and confidence

Stiffness and guarding after an injury can leave the foot or ankle feeling restricted long after the original injury has healed. Restoring normal movement helps you trust the joint again, not just feel less pain.

📝 Tools to self-manage

Every session ends with personalised advice on footwear, loading and exercises to help you stay pain free and reduce the risk of recurrence.

What to Expect at Your Appointment

Every treatment begins with a brief orthopaedic assessment to identify exactly what is causing your foot or ankle pain. No two treatments are the same.

⏱ Durations

60 or 90 minutes, from £50 and £70. For longstanding or complex foot and ankle pain, 90 minutes is often recommended for the first session.

🛏 Position and comfort

You will be comfortably positioned on the treatment table. Ema adjusts your position to access the foot, ankle and lower leg effectively.

👗 What to wear

Loose, comfortable clothing works best, ideally something that allows easy access to your lower leg. Bare feet are required for assessment and treatment.

🌿 The environment

Our clinic sits on the edge of a woodland park, with natural bird song. A calm, unhurried setting where you can focus entirely on your recovery.

📋 After your treatment

Your care does not end when you leave. You will receive specific stretches, movement advice and a personalised rehab plan to take home.

🚗 Parking and facilities

We advise you to avoid a heavy meal and use the toilet before you arrive. Toilet facilities are available on site. If you have any special requirements please get in touch.

📌 New clients: No need to arrive early. The consultation and assessment are built into your appointment time. All new clients are asked to complete a consultation form before their first session, which you can do online in advance.

Common Foot and Ankle Presentations

Foot and ankle pain has several common patterns, and identifying yours helps shape the right approach to treatment.

Ankle sprains and instability

Following a sprain, the surrounding muscles and ligaments can remain tight or guarded long after the initial injury heals, sometimes leaving the ankle feeling unstable or prone to rolling again.

Tendonitis

Overuse or repetitive strain on the tendons around the foot and ankle can lead to inflammation and pain, often building gradually rather than from a single injury.

Metatarsalgia

Pain on the top or ball of the foot, often linked to footwear, repetitive impact, or changes in how weight is distributed through the foot.

When to see your GP first

If you have a recent injury with significant swelling, are unable to bear weight at all, or suspect a fracture, please see your GP or A&E before booking. Ema will always advise honestly if she feels medical assessment is needed first.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can massage actually help foot and ankle pain?

Yes. Research into ankle sprain rehabilitation has found massage produces meaningful improvement compared to no treatment, and manual therapy has also been shown to improve balance and stability in people with ongoing ankle instability. Advanced clinical massage goes further than general massage because it is assessment led, targeting the specific structures contributing to your pain.

I sprained my ankle a while ago and it still feels unstable. Can you help?

Yes, this is a very common pattern. After a sprain, the surrounding tissue can remain tight or guarded long after the injury has technically healed, which can leave the ankle feeling weak or unstable. Ema's assessment looks at the whole ankle and lower leg to identify what's still restricted.

How many sessions will I need?

This varies depending on your presentation, how long you have had it, and how your body responds. Many clients notice a difference within the first few sessions. Ema will give you an honest assessment after your first appointment.

Is my heel pain plantar fasciitis or something else?

Sharp pain on the sole of the heel, especially first thing in the morning, is the classic pattern of plantar fasciitis. If that sounds like you, visit our dedicated plantar fasciitis page for more specific information. Pain elsewhere in the foot or ankle, such as the top of the foot or around a joint, is more likely tendonitis, metatarsalgia, or a sprain related issue, which this page covers.

Can you help with tendonitis?

Yes. Tendonitis often responds well to releasing tension in the surrounding muscles that are placing extra load on the affected tendon, alongside advice on activity and load management.

Do I need a GP referral?

No referral is needed for most clients. You can book directly online. If you have a recent injury with significant swelling, cannot bear weight at all, or suspect a fracture, please see your GP or A&E first, and Ema will always advise honestly if she feels medical assessment is needed before treatment.

What if I need to cancel or reschedule?

No problem at all. If you need to cancel or reschedule, just get in touch and we will always do our best to rearrange your appointment or provide a refund. Full details are in our terms and conditions.
