TMJ Massage in Warrington

Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ) disorder causes pain and dysfunction in the jaw joint and surrounding muscles. Symptoms include jaw pain, clicking, headaches, earache and difficulty chewing. Many people live with this for years, often after trying Botox or other management approaches, without finding lasting relief.

The jaw is closely connected to the neck, shoulders and skull base, so tension rarely stays in one place. Years of clenching, grinding, stress or poor posture can build up tightness in the muscles around the jaw joint, which in turn can refer pain into the head and neck as headaches or earache. Ema's assessment looks at this whole area, not just the jaw itself, since the cause is often found somewhere connected rather than directly under the pain.

Every session begins with a brief orthopaedic assessment so nothing is guesswork. Ema uses advanced clinical massage techniques specifically targeting the jaw, neck and facial muscles to release tension and restore normal movement. Treatment is gentle, effective and completely natural, no injections, no medication.

We can help with:

Migraines and headaches Neck and shoulder tension Pelvic girdle pain Jaw clicking or locking Earache Difficulty chewing Teeth grinding and clenching Facial muscle tension Stress and anxiety

🔍 A connection worth exploring: Ema has a particular interest in how the jaw and pelvis relate to each other, a connection she finds genuinely fascinating and is still exploring, even though it is not yet fully understood within the profession. Some clients have noticed a difference in pelvic girdle pain after jaw focused treatment, and Ema continues to investigate this relationship with curiosity rather than claiming it as a guaranteed fix.

Benefits of TMJ Massage

📉 Reduced pain and improved movement

A 2024 randomised controlled trial found massage therapy improved pain levels and maximal mouth opening in people with TMJ disorder, with greater improvement when combined with muscle relaxation techniques.

🎯 Targets the masseter directly

The masseter, the main muscle used for chewing and clenching, is one of the most common sites for trigger points in the body. These can refer pain into the jaw, ear and temples, and releasing them is a core part of clinical TMJ treatment.

🤕 Eases tension headaches

There is a well established link between jaw muscle tension and headaches. Trigger points in the masseter and surrounding muscles are recognised contributors to tension type headaches, earache and facial tightness.

😬 Helps with clenching and grinding

Bruxism, clenching or grinding the teeth, particularly overnight, is a common cause of TMJ trigger points. Releasing this tension can reduce morning jaw pain and stiffness associated with overnight grinding.

💆 Non-invasive and drug free

Soft tissue manual therapy has been shown in clinical research to alleviate TMJ symptoms without injections or medication, offering an alternative or complement to treatments such as Botox.

📝 Tools to self-manage

Every session ends with personalised advice on posture, jaw habits and self-massage techniques. Clients say they learn more about what is driving their jaw tension from one session with Ema than from years of other approaches.

What to Expect at Your Appointment

Every treatment begins with a brief orthopaedic assessment to identify exactly which muscles around your jaw, neck and skull base are contributing to your symptoms. No two treatments are the same.

⏱ Durations

60 or 90 minutes, from £50 and £70. For long-standing TMJ pain, 90 minutes is often recommended for the first session.

🛏 Position and comfort

You will be comfortably positioned on the treatment table, well covered with towels throughout. Ema works gently around the jaw, face and neck, checking in with you regularly given how sensitive this area can be.

👗 What to wear

Loose, comfortable clothing works best. You may be asked to remove your top so the neck and shoulders can also be accessed, and you will always be well covered with towels throughout.

🌿 The environment

Our clinic sits on the edge of a woodland park, with natural bird song. A calm, unhurried setting where you can fully relax your jaw and the rest of your body.

📋 After your treatment

Your care does not end when you leave. You will receive specific advice on jaw posture, clenching habits and self-massage techniques to help manage symptoms between sessions.

🚗 Parking and facilities

We advise you to avoid a heavy meal and use the toilet before you arrive. Toilet facilities are available on site. If you have any special requirements please get in touch.

📌 New clients: No need to arrive early. The consultation and assessment are built into your appointment time. All new clients are asked to complete a consultation form before their first session, which you can do online in advance.

Common Causes of TMJ Pain

TMJ disorder has several common causes, and identifying yours helps shape the right approach to treatment.

Clenching and grinding

Bruxism, clenching or grinding the teeth, often happens overnight without people realising. It is one of the most common causes of jaw trigger points and morning jaw pain or headaches.

Stress and tension

Emotional stress often shows up physically as jaw clenching, even during the day. Many clients are surprised to discover how much tension they are holding in this area.

Posture and head position

A forward head posture, common with desk work and screen use, places extra strain on the jaw muscles and can contribute to or worsen TMJ symptoms over time.

When to see your dentist or GP first

If you have dental pain, a recent jaw injury, or your jaw locks completely, please see your dentist or GP before booking. Ema will always advise honestly if she feels medical assessment is needed first.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can massage actually help TMJ pain?

Yes. A 2024 randomised controlled trial found massage therapy improved pain levels and jaw movement in people with TMJ disorder. Advanced clinical massage goes further than general massage because it is assessment-led, targeting the specific muscles contributing to your symptoms.

I grind my teeth at night. Can this be causing my jaw pain?

Very likely yes. Bruxism, clenching or grinding the teeth overnight, is one of the most common causes of TMJ trigger points, often leading to morning jaw pain, headaches or earache without people realising the connection. Ema’s assessment will look for signs of this.

How many sessions will I need?

This varies depending on how long you have had your symptoms and how your body responds. Many clients notice a difference within the first one to three sessions, with more significant change after a course of treatment. Ema will give you an honest assessment after your first appointment.

I have had TMJ pain for years and tried Botox. Can massage still help?

Chronic TMJ pain is one of the conditions Ema treats regularly, including clients who have tried Botox or other management approaches without lasting results. Working on the masseter and surrounding muscles can be highly effective because it addresses the underlying tension, not just the symptoms.

Will treatment be painful given how sensitive my jaw is?

Ema works gently and within your comfort level at all times, checking in with you regularly given how sensitive the jaw and face can be. Pressure is always adjusted to what feels right for you.

Do I need a dentist or GP referral?

No referral is needed for most clients. You can book directly online. If you have dental pain, a recent jaw injury, or your jaw locks completely, please see your dentist or GP first, and Ema will always advise honestly if she feels medical assessment is needed before treatment.

What if I need to cancel or reschedule?

No problem at all. If you need to cancel or reschedule, just get in touch and we will always do our best to rearrange your appointment or provide a refund. Full details are in our terms and conditions.
